EXECUTIVE RECRUITERS
The first thing that you should know about executive recruiters is that many actually work with job seekers who are not executives. The second thing to know is to never pay to use their recruiting services. The employer should be paying them for their services.

TIPS
- There are two types of executive recruiters--contingency and retained. Retained recruiters get paid for their services even if they do not find someone for the position. They typically deal with higher-level executives--$100,000 and up. They pursue many avenues to develop their own short-list of potential candidates.
- Contingency recruiters only get paid if they find a candidate so they cast a wider net. They work with mid-level and some high-level candidates--typically under $100,000 annually. They keep resumes on file and also pursue additional sourcing methods to find and present a strong pool of candidates for employers to choose from.
- It is to your advantage to work with more than one recruiter to maximize your opportunities. Research different recruiters to determine those that specialize in your field.
- Understand that the hiring company is the recruiter's client, not the job seeker. Their primary concern is to find candidates to fit a specific job for the client. You are only important to them if you have the right skills to fill positions they have open or may be coming available.
- You can build lasting relationships with recruiters by referring candidates to them to build their pool of candidates. This way when you are in need you will have already built a relationship.

TIPS
Employers are looking for winners who can solve their problems in this global and competitive world. You can not afford to be modest on your resume and in interviews. You must be prepared to separate yourself from the competition.
- Prepare a short two to three minute powerful "commercial" message that best reflects your brand value when asked that well-known "Tell Me About Yourself" question and throughout the interview.
.
- It is critical for executives to showcase their leadership capabilities--the ability to think strategically, define disconnects within the company, negotiate difficult situations, and facilitate change.
- As an executive you need to position yourself as a leader and expert in your field. How can you do that? Author articles and books, present at conferences, become an adjunct instructor, attract media attention.
